Depression
No one chooses depression, rather depression comes from biological and psychosocial factors and can affect people of all ages.
Depression counselling is key to helping reduce symptoms or recover from depression.
What Does Depression Feel Like?
Depression can feel like sinking into a black pit with no bottom. It frequently develops over a long period that slowly moves from mild to more severe symptoms so that one may not even notice their decline in mood. Depression is typified by sadness, low energy, decreased motivation, and it can affect daily functioning by reducing concentration and difficulty doing ordinary tasks. It is often characterized by oversleeping or insomnia and loss of appetite. It is common for people to start feeling worthless and wonder about the point of living.
Depression Counselling
Depression counselling can help you identify and understand your symptoms and learn strategies for healthier functioning. Engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a routine, setting realistic goals, reducing your stress, thinking healthier, improving your diet, spending leisure time, and practicing mindfulness can all play a role in reducing symptoms of depression. These strategies, when combined with professional support, can make a significant difference in one's mental health
Therapeutic Approaches
Many counsellors use a variety of evidence-based therapies that fit with the needs and strengths of the client. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used approach that helps you identify and challenge negative thought patterns to alter unwanted behavior patterns. CBT empowers individuals to challenge distorted perceptions of themselves and their environment, fostering healthier thinking patterns and coping mechanisms.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), teaches mindfulness and other skills for managing stress, regulating emotions, and improving relationships. This can be particularly beneficial for those with depression stemming from interpersonal conflicts or emotional dysregulation.
Some people are helped by Psychodynamic Therapy which explores the influence of past experiences. Examining your inner life may identify missing information about yourself and your family or social background that are contributing to your depression. Although you may feel vulnerable to explore your past, it can be life changing.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is another innovative approach, combining traditional cognitive therapy techniques with mindfulness practices. MBCT encourages individuals to become more aware of the present moment and less caught up in negative thought cycles that can lead to relapse. This method is particularly effective in preventing depression recurrence, teaching individuals to recognize and disengage from habitual patterns of negative thinking.
Every person is unique and thus these diverse therapies offer a spectrum of options that address the individual circumstances and preferences of each person dealing with depression.
Is Medication Required?
People who are significantly depressed and having difficulty doing daily tasks, may require medication to boost their mood so that they are able to engage in therapy. An anti-depressant medication helps many people reduce depression symptoms. If you have depression symptoms, you should see your medical doctor because it is possible there are underlying health issues that are causing or exacerbating your mental health.
Not everyone who is depressed has to take medication to improve, but it is important to get therapy before depression symptoms get worse. If you are not severely depressed you may be able to improve your mood through therapy or other life changes.
Hold onto Hope
Depression can make everything feel insurmountable, but it's crucial to remember that it is treatable, and many have walked this path before you. Addressing both the mind and body through an integration of depression counselling, lifestyle changes, and/or medication, are all reputable ways to improve your mental health.
If you are struggling with depression, remember that your feelings are valid, and help is available. Many people with depression are able to rediscover joy and regain a sense of purpose.
